NORTH MOUNT PLEASANT ARTS CENTRE CLIMATE RISK AND RESILIENCE ASSESSMENT

Posted on

The City of Calgary has embarked on a climate resilience planning process in response to the impactful climate
changes being experienced by the City. This project contributes to the process by conducting a climate risk and
resilience assessment (CRRA) on the North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre in accordance with the City’s Integrated
Risk Management Framework and the Public Infrastructure Climate Risk Assessment process.

The North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre is located at 523 27 Avenue NW, Calgary, Alberta. The original building on
the property was a single-storey structure built on the north side of the site in 1913. In 1995, a wood-framed
addition and two additional structures – the Kiln Building and Kiln Shed – were made to the building.

The methodology applied in this project builds upon the City’s Public Infrastructure Climate Risk Assessment
process, which is based partially on the PIEVC process. It has been expanded it to include adaptation planning and
reporting to align with the City’s climate risk framework. This consisted of five procedural steps:

1. Impacts assessment
2. Consequence scoring
3. Risk assessment
4. Adaptation identification and prioritization
5. Options analysis

The process involved engaging with City staff and members of the design team through an online survey and three
virtual workshops to complete the climate hazard impacts assessment, score consequences, and identify possible
adaptation measures.
